Frequently Asked Questions
Program Overview & Benefits
Why are we offering Sophia free to high schoolers?
Sophia believes everyone deserves access to college-level courses—without cost as a barrier. To advance our mission, we’re offering select courses for free to up to 100,000 high-schoolers across the U.S. this summer.
This program is perfect for high schoolers seeking to explore college-level courses, get ahead on their college education, or simply dive into summer learning!
What does the free offering include?
Eligible high school juniors and seniors will have full access to 6 courses—Introduction to Nutrition, College Algebra, Human Biology, Introduction to Information Technology, Introduction to Business, and College Readiness—for 60 days upon signup.
We've opted to offer these courses free, as they're among our most popular, widely transferable, and well-suited for high schoolers seeking college credit.
What if I finish my free courses during the free period or want to keep using Sophia after the free period?
To continue taking Sophia courses not offered in this program or after the free period, you can subscribe to become a paid member.
Signup & Eligibility
How do I sign up?
To sign up, you (the high schooler) will:
- Create an account by clicking any "Sign Up Free Today!" button on this page. (Important: Signing up from other Sophia pages will not grant access to this free program).
- Complete your profile.
Voila! You can try out any of our 6 free Sophia courses now.
Pro tip: To access these courses beyond the first Challenge (quiz), just upload a copy or photo of your latest report card to confirm your eligibility.
Who should go through the signup process for this program: the high schooler or their parent/guardian?
We recommend that the high schooler sign up, though their parent/guardian may sign up on their behalf—just be sure to enter the high schooler's information (not yours!). The name on your Sophia account will be the name on your transcript.
Do I need a school email to register?
No. In fact, we strongly recommend that the high schooler use their personal, non-school email address to sign up. This way, you can easily access transcripts and other emails from Sophia after you graduate high school.
When can I sign up for the program? How long will I have free access to Sophia?
Eligible high schoolers must sign up between June 2, 2025 and July 31, 2025. They'll have access to select Sophia courses for 60 days from signup.
Who is eligible for this program?
We're offering this special opportunity to the first 100,000 incoming U.S. high school juniors or seniors for the 2025-2026 school year who sign up between June 2, 2025 and July 31, 2025.
Students who are working on their GED are not eligible for this program.
How will Sophia know I'm eligible?
After you create your account and complete your profile, you'll be prompted to upload a copy or photo of your latest report card to confirm that you're an incoming high school junior or senior for the 2025-2026 school year.
Don't worry! There are no grade or GPA requirements to participate!
If you do not have a report card, please contact a Learning Coach via our Help Center.
Does it matter which high school I attend or if I'm homeschooled?
Nope! As long as you're a rising junior or senior in the 2025-2026 school year, you can join.
If you do not have a report card (which we would use to confirm eligibility), please contact a Learning Coach via our Help Center.
I'm interested in Sophia but not eligible for this program. Can I still use Sophia?
Absolutely! Even if you're not eligible for this program, you can always start a free trial (no credit card required or time limit) or subscribe to become a paid member.
Learning Experience & Transfer Credit
How does Sophia compare to AP courses and dual enrollment?
Sophia is similar to AP courses and dual enrollment because, like them, Sophia is a tool you can use during high school to help you earn college credit!
What sets Sophia apart is its flexibility. Unlike AP or dual enrollment, your success isn't tied to a single score or grade.
With our self-paced pass/fail courses, Sophia lets you demonstrate your learning as you go—anytime, anywhere, without the rigid structure or timelines of AP exams and dual-enrollment programs.
Why should I take classes from Sophia instead of my local university or community college?
Sophia's college-level courses offer flexibility to the max. You can learn at your own pace. All course materials are included, so forget about spending money on textbooks! You can take our courses anytime, anywhere, and on most any device.
As a parent/guardian, will I have access to information about my high schooler's coursework?
When signing up, the high schooler may authorize a third party (e.g., parent/guardian, teacher, counselor) to access information about their coursework, such as progress and scores.
How do I transfer Sophia courses for college credit?
Sophia courses are designed to transfer for college credit to our 80+ partner colleges and have been reviewed for credit at over 1,000 other colleges and universities. When you successfully complete a course, we’ll send you an email with instructions on ordering your official transcript. If you decide to enroll at a university, you can provide this transcript to be considered for credit. If you need help, our Learning Coaches are here to support you throughout the process!
Support & Accommodations
What support resources does Sophia offer?
Sophia provides technical support through our Learning Coaches. We also include course materials in the form of a digital tutorial (that's right, no purchasing textbooks!). Our courses offer plenty of practice questions. Some courses even offer tutoring.
What accommodations are available for high schoolers with disabilities? Is documentation required?
Sophia offers accommodations, such as extended time for assessments, to support high schoolers with disabilities. Students or their parents/guardians should contact our Learning Coaches to discuss their needs and provide any required documentation.
Sophia Partner Colleges & Universities
Sophia partners directly with 80+ colleges and universities that have agreed to accept our college-level courses, so they seamlessly transfer into programs at these schools.
